PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- A male pit bull found shot in the head and dumped on the side of the road has died.
Several community members rallied around the injured male pitbull hoping to save its life.
Christine Wilker initially posted in a public Facebook group that she spotted an injured pit bull, whom she named Anchor, in the middle of A1A Guana.
At first glance, Wilker thought Anchor might have been hit by a car. She stated Anchor was bleeding from his eye and nose and had a lump on his head.
She later learned he had actually been shot in the head and had a bullet lodged deep in his brain.
A rescue organization, SAFE, took Anchor in and tried to save his life -- unfortunately his injuries were too severe and he was put down.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is now investigating his crime, anyone who knows anything is asked to contact them.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story state Anchor was still alive. Unfortunately, his injuries were too severe and had to be put down.
