A 28-year-old woman was found dead in an apartment fire in the 5800 block of University Boulevard.
Bozena Gnjidic was found laying on the floor in her wheelchair, obviously charred from the fire at the Avesta Grande Pointe apartments on University Boulevard, according to a report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
There was a fire around the wheelchair Gnjidic was in and that the battery of the smoke detector was removed and that both the detector and the battery were on the floor.
A cause of the fire has not yet been released.
The statement reads:
All of us in the Avesta family are deeply saddened by the death of one of our residents who passed away today during a fire at our Grand Pointe community. Our prayers are with the victim’s family during this difficult time. No one else was injured in this fire, and thanks to the quick response of Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, no other apartment units were damaged. We are now working with investigators to make sure they have everything they need from us as they determine the cause of this fire.
