Nine shootings, five fatal, in Jacksonville in just one week

In the first 48 days of 2019, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has confirmed 21 murders in the city.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A violent weekend in Jacksonville was marked by at least six shootings within 48 hours.

The nine reported shootings resulted in at least five deaths and 7 injuries.

The Northside Coalition of Jacksonville is calling for a declaration of a State of Urgency in "an effort to stem the tide of gun violence in Jacksonville.”

“Representatives of the public and elected officials need to meet and engage in honest dialog about public safety,” said Ben Frazier, President of the Northside Coalition of Jacksonville. “These options should include asking the public to begin a word of mouth campaign calling for a cease-fire in Duval."

In the 48 days so far in 2019, there have been 21 confirmed murders in Jacksonville according to information from JSO. Additional homicides remain under investigation and are pending classification.

Anna Brosche released the following statement on Sunday regarding the weekend violence:

"... Murder is becoming so common in Jacksonville, it no longer shocks or phases many in our city. To an extent, many of our citizens have become desensitized to it and that in and of itself is both sad and terrifying."

First Coast News reached out to Mayor Curry’s office for comment about the violent weekend on Saturday and heard back from him on Tuesday.
